Leaving behind a delicious gig on TV, Roy De Jesus an Emmy nominated journalist says he’d rather put family fun time first rather than pursue a lucrative career.
De Jesus jump started his career as the first producer for one of the first 24 hr Spanish language local TV news stations in the country Bay News 9 en Espanol. He later would become the weekend anchor of the channel and main reporter. His work earned him numerous nominations for awards including an Emmy and the Individual achievement honors for television news reporting in a major market from the Associated Press.
His ability to report in two languages helped him transition into the main Bay News 9 news department and this is when his job got a little tastier. He helped create Chef’s Kitchen a weekly cooking segment which brought the cameras inside some of Tampa Bay’s and Central Florida’s finest restaurants.
In his more than six years covering the culinary arts, he interviewed distinguished top chefs and celebrity icons of gastronomy such as Food Network superstar Paula Deen, James Beard award winning Master Chef Rick Bayless, and Iron Chef Cat Cora, among others.
For his work he was again nominated for an Emmy award. He would soon become the Tampa Bay area’s first Web Anchor/Reporter for BayNews9.com. Within a year BN9.com would end up winning the national Edward R. Morrow award–one of the most prestigious awards in the industry.
Puerto Rican by birth, and a Florida Gator by choice, De Jesús began his television career at WUFT, the University of Florida’s PBS affiliate. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and in Journalism.
The second of six children, Roy is no stranger to loud and energetic events. He loves cooking and spending time with his family.
